Kawasaki is planning to introduce new Z400 in India as a replacement model to the Z300, which was discontinued last year. The Ninja 300 was replaced by new Ninja 400 in several markets including India, but the Kawasaki Z400 was delayed for unknown reasons.
Since launch, the Ninja 400 has not received a good response considering its awkward pricing, which puts it between between Ninja 300 and Ninja 650. Another reason for slow sales of the fully faired sportsbike is the value for money pricing of KTM RC 390. We hope that the Z400 is priced a lot more competitively than its fully faired sibling.
The Z400 is likely to be powered powered by 399 cc, twin cylinder, fuel injected engine producing 47.5 bhp of peak power and 38 Nm of peak torque. This engine is mated to 6 speed gearbox and slipper clutch will be standard like its faired sibling. The braking power comes from 2-piston caliper 310 mm front disc and 220 mm disc at rear.
awasaki Z400 also comes with dual channel ABS as standard and LED lighting for both headlamps and tail lamps. The 41 mm telescopic front suspension and monoshock at rear will be carried forward from Ninja 400. We can expect the suspension to be tuned towards sporty handling.
Kawasaki Z400 will come with fully digital instrument cluster and handle bar will be a single piece unit with seating higher than Ninja 400. Kawasaki Z400 will compete against KTM Duke 390 and BMW G 310R. The expected price for the Z400 is about Rs 4 lakh mark. This is still pretty high compared to the KTM 390 Duke and the BMW G 310 R, which are sold for Rs 2.40 lakh and Rs 2.99 lakh respectively (all prices ex-showroom Delhi).
Meanwhile, we won’t have to wait much longer for the Z400 for Kawasaki is likely tp unveil the bike at this year’s EICMA show. The India launch is likely to happen early next year. The company is also planning to make India as its production hub for African and Latin American market. This means localised Ninja 400 and Z400 bikes for India. Hence a price drop similar to Ninja 300 is possible.
